You REALLY Can Do More Than You Think

By Aida Ingram, CEO of An Inspired You

Have you ever said anything like this: “I just feel like giving up,” “I am at the end of my rope,” or “I don’t know what else I could do!”? You have a vision, a dream, and a plan so big and so great that at times it feels overwhelming; it may even feel like a weight.  You “kinda believe,” but you wonder how in the world you’re going to make it happen.  You may even have thoughts running through your head, saying, “I don’t know enough,” or “I’m not qualified.” What’s more, you may even be quietly saying you are afraid. The good news is that this does not have to be the end of the story!

Today, instead of being afraid or stopping, close your eyes and imagine being free to achieve absolutely anything you want (doesn’t that feel good?). Now stop and really take it all in. You really can achieve anything you want, because of what’s inside of you!  Each of us is full of unbelievable and unparalleled greatness, but I am convinced that most of us never realize it all.  Generally speaking, people give up before they even get started, or shortly thereafter; as a result, “we” don’t get to see what we are really capable of achieving.

There is a great movie called “Facing the Giant.” It is one of my personal favorites.  In my favorite scene, the coach over hears his players talking about how their defeat is inevitable, and he moves into lesson mode.  He asked one of his players to do the death crawl with another player on his back, and then he asks him to do his best.  The coach walks beside him and helps this player understand that there is more inside of him than he could ever imagine.  I love this!  This player is amazed at what he is able to achieve with the coach by his side.

What aspect of your life are things difficult? Where do they seem almost impossible, or just to big?  That is the place in your life that is prime and ripe for growth.

Most, if not all of us, have heard things about what we were “capable of doing.” Those messages may have been delivered directly, or indirectly, when people said things to you like, “You can’t do that,” or “Who do you think you are?” Tragically those messages may have never left you and maybe one of the reasons why you occasionally stumble. Here are a few steps you can take to transcend your self-imposed limitations, and really see what’s possible so your story doesn’t have to end with one of those lingering questions.

Three Steps to Help You Move Forward

Step One- In this process you realize that even you don’t fully understand the greatness inside of you. Be careful what you say. Make a commitment; challenge your language daily!  Don’t say can’t, won’t or anything else that limits your perception of what is possible in your life. Be open to the possibility that you don’t really know what you are capable of, so don’t define it.

Step Two- Involves pressing through your emotions, which is a daily requirement. Whenever you feel like you can’t, make yourself go a little farther.  Don’t allow yourself to stop, and don’t quit; focus on continuing and going further even if you don’t think you can!

Step 3- Get an internal and external cheerleader.  We need to speak life to our dreams of moving forward.  When your friends, “stinking thinking” come along, tell them that their services are no longer needed. Speak optimism into all areas of your life.  Affirm yourself, and remind yourself that you are capable of so much more than you realize and say it so much that you get sick and tired of hearing it. Then get an external cheerleader as well so when you get discouraged you have someone else around who can remind you of how much more is inside of you.  Get someone who will not let you quit, and who won’t let your “compelling story” stop them from helping you push forward!  The coach in the movie doesn’t buy the story that the player can’t go anymore, so he keeps on pushing.  You need someone around you who will do the same thing for you.

These three steps are a great beginning; they will help you keep going and they will help you remember what is possible, if you keep moving forward.  Remember: if you stop pushing, you will never know what is there!  I celebrate you and look forward to watching you as realize you really can do more than you think!
